2017: That Was The Year That Was

Clash 1

Well that was 2017.

I keep thinking that one of these years will be a quiet one. Musicians have those. For some reason we just aren’t what the year needs. Sometimes we get two in a row. Sometimes three. Sometimes we quit before our time comes round again. Sometimes we keep the faith and our patience is rewarded. One thing’s for sure though, we never escape unscathed. We all get the quiet ones, and my time will come round again.

Thankfully, 2017 wasn’t that year, and a MASSIVE thank you to all you cheered, sang, applauded, shook, rattled and rolled; to all who bought CDs, downloaded, played videos; to everyone who booked me, did sound and lighting, fed me, watered me and put me up…..and put up with me; to all who encouraged me, messaged when times were hard, commented on threads, shared and retweeted; to all who supported We Shall Overcome, donating to causes up and down the land and helping untold numbers of people when they needed it most. You all keep me going.

future-thumbnail-1

The year started with a new album. It usually does. This time around I was really proud of it and I knew it contained my best songs, and best poems. ‘The Future Needs Us Now’ was officially released on 6th January and both the title track and ‘Blue Town’ were played by Tom Robinson on 6Music, and the poem ‘Why Are You So Angry?’ went viral several times on live videos. I recorded some of the key songs, and some old favourites, with Michael Lee Toas and the resulting 23 videos were released as ‘The Shed Sessions’. You can find them under the header elsewhere on this website, but the aforementioned poem is here:

The album was launched at The Station, Ashton-under-Lyne at a big WSO All-dayer which raised enough money to help Pauline Town get a number of people off the streets and into accomodation; a great start for the record, and if that was all it had achieved I’d have taken that. It was a cracking day and set the tone for another hectic year on the road.

May Day 60 Joe

I managed to haul my way through Doncaster, Dewsbury, Scarborough, Wakefield, Salford, Nottingham, South Kirkby, Milnsbridge, Pickering, Barnsley, Leicester, London, Sheffield, Hull, Carlisle, Manchester, Saltburn, Chesterfield, Belper, Glastonbury, Southport, Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Newcastle, Redcar, Wigan, Stockton-on-Tees, Selby, Belfast, Huddersfield, Bolton, Louth, Bradford, Warsop, Stainforth, Portslade, Leeds, Durham, Liverpool, Goole, Scunthorpe, Otley, Darlington and York…..many of them more than once; and once again I was met with amazing people trying to change the world for the better. On the way, on top of all the We Shall Overcome campaigns the gigs were supporting, I helped Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, the Labour Party election campaign, Punk 4 the Homeless, Love Music Hate Racism, International Brigades Memorial Trust, Hope Not Hate, and several campaigns supporting refugees to name but a few, but some of the help we raised was for individuals struggling with health or housing and these matter as much, if not more as they show the direct correlation between live music and help on our streets. As I keep saying through the mic, gigs are one of the few places we gather as a community with a shared purpose, and they can be used for so much more than just selling CDs and t-shirts and expanding a mailing list. It matters.

London 3

There were obvious highlights out there. I loved both trips to London, first for The Clash 40th anniversary gig….

Clash 7

and then for the Betsey Trotwood all-dayer where I did both a set of songs AND my very first poetry gig, and I can’t thank Chip and Nadia enough for making that possible. Nor can I thank Lynda and Ernest enough for finally making me get on a plane and play Belfast! I had a phenomenal couple of days with them being shown the sights of an incredible city, and I’ll never forget my time there.

May Day Festival of Solidarity was once again a blinding weekend and putting that bill together with Tony, and watching set after set of musical genius, is something I hope we can do together for many years to come.

And of course, Glastonbury Festival where, thanks to Billy Bragg, I got to play the Leftfield stage, and soak up an unforgettable weekend of music and comradeship.

I gave Glastonbury my all, but then I did the same in Wigan a few days later, and the town after that. Some of the gigs were rammed, others a little more intimate, but I know you always got everything I had, and I don’t treat one gig any different from the next because you are never playing for who isn’t there, only ever for who is. Glastonbury was great, but they only come round every……well, for me, thirty years! There was more work needed doing.

We Shall Overcome exceeded all our expectations, and we finish the year having clocked up 700 gigs in 142 towns and cities across nine countries on three continents, all since we kicked it off in May 2015. Those events have raised an estimated £350,000 worth of food, cash, clothing, bedding, furniture, tents and electrical goods for those suffering at the sharp end of austerity; and as #WSO2017 makes way for #WSO2018 we take a big deep breath before launching ourselves headlong into the fight of our lives, because if we are going to change things for the better in this country I believe it is now or never. Socialism has struck many blows this year, not least in the June election, but the fight is far from over and if we rest on our laurels, the powers that be will rally and defeat us. We cannot allow this to happen, and We Shall Overcome will be there for anyone who needs us whether supporting the homeless and hungry, helping raise funds for striking workers, or just reminding people that our own fates depend on those of our friends and neighbours, that communities need the encouragement and heart of people active within them in order to survive; that together we are stronger.

The General Election brought a flurry of gigs and campaigning, and I raised funds for local CLPs as well as playing a number of dates on the Stand Up For Labour tour. I recorded two songs for the Corbyn campaign and loved hearing those choruses coming back at me in every town I visited.

I was proud to play a small part in turning the tide over that few weeks in May and early June, and I will continue to support the fight against the Tories in whatever way I can, however long it takes.

I finished the year releasing another single with The Hatfield Brigade. ‘They Could Not Break This Town’ was great fun to record, and will be a live favourite for years to come I am sure of it.

The video is here:

and the song can be found on the new album.

Which brings us right back to where we started. On Monday January 1st I launch another record. ‘Not On Our Watch’ was recorded in breaks between the madness, and completed with the addition of Rebekah Findlay‘s magic dust in November. I can say hand on heart you get everything I had to give this year, and I am very proud of it. I hope you give it a whirl and find something on there that reaches out and plucks on your heartstrings. That’s what I make them for.

So there we have it. That was the year that was. As the new year turns we start where we left off. Benefit gigs, solidarity gigs, WSO organising, another May Day Festival of Solidarity, the exciting prospect of MLT Productions launching the We Shall Overcome documentary film…..I’ll be out there doing Woody’s Work as always and it would be great to see you.

……oh, and look out for The Armistice Tour in late October/early November. I’ll be playing the ‘Potter’s Field’ songs for the first time in nine years and there will be an accompanying album. So watch this space x

Goodbye to one year, and hello to another.

Maybe this will be that quiet one?

Don’t bank on it.

Christmas Hospital Run: Mission Accomplished

Hospital 2

Had a cracking day singing in Grimsby and Scunthorpe hospitals for children too poorly to make it home for Christmas; and a massive thank you to Joe Francis and Unison for making it happen.

Songs were sung, shakers shaken, party blower solos de rigueur and general mayhem ensued. It is heartbreaking to see youngsters so poorly and their anxious parents so distraught, but with the amazing NHS staff in close attendance, and a little magic in the air, you should never underestimate the power the humble party blower has to raise a chuckle.

Great day. Load of copies of ‘SWELL’, the kid’s book I wrote with Kevin Pearson, found new homes and I hope raised a few smiles long into the afternoon.

Great to have the support of Unison and Melanie Onn and Nic Dakin the two local Labour MPs who supported the event by shaking pots of dried peas as loud as anyone out there.

There are plans afoot for next Christmas, new books, union choirs and general mischief.

Can’t wait.

New Album Available to Pre-Order NOW!

Not On Our Watch low res thumbnail

‘NOT ON OUR WATCH’, my brand new album, was mastered at Strange Reality Studios on Monday 27th November and is now available to pre-order on CD.

We have a release date of Monday 1st January and CD copies will ship as soon as I have them in my possession after that.

If you pre-order now you can bag the music already as the download will be available to you immediately after you buy the CD.

All on this link:

https://joesolomusic.bandcamp.com/album/not-on-our-watch

I have once again been joined by the incredible Rebekah Findlay whose magical violin graces six of the 13 songs. I’m also joined by The Hatfield Brigade on ‘They Could Not Break This Town’, our forthcoming single, which also graces the album.

Subjects covered include post-Brexit institutional racism, Grenfell, Trump’s travel ban, the murder of Heather Heyer, Tory delusions, and, on very possibly my favourite song I’ve ever penned, the heroic tale of Clem Beckett and Christopher Caudwell at Jarama; and lots more besides.

Very proud of it.

Please help me get it out there.

Thanks folks x

Hatfield Brigade CD Available to Pre-Order

Hatfield Brigade 2017 Sleeve 2

Well, the title says it all really, but ‘They Could Not Break This Town’, the new single from Joe Solo & The Hatfield Brigade is available to pre-order from Bandcamp on the link below:

https://joesolomusic.bandcamp.com/album/they-could-not-break-this-town

The CD is strictly limited edition, but if we get enough pre-orders the amount may vary. At the moment we can afford 200 copies with 125 going on sale, but if we are helped along by pre-orders we will use the extra help to fund 300 and ultimately raise more for the DN7 Hardship Fund to help Doncaster’s homeless through this winter.

The CD is set to £3 or ‘Name Your Price’, so if you can afford to help us by donating a little more it will be very much appreciated. The CD is printed and comes in a plastic wallet with an insert of the above design by Kevin Pearson of Vagrant Art; and the disc also contains the added bonus of a B-Side in the form of last year’s ‘Merry Christmas From Hatfield Main’. Definitely worth £3 of anyone’s money. The first 50 copies also come with a Joe Solo & The Hatfield Brigade sticker.

The music video by Michael Lee Toas of MLT Productions should be with us in 10 days time and from there we’ll be bombarding you with begs for shares and retweets. Please bear with us. Without the industry and its press departments we have to do it the old fashioned way and rely on People Power to get the word out there. We know you won’t let us down x

‘They Could Not Break This Town’ is released on December 4th on download and aforementioned CD.

Hatfield Brigade Recording- “Like Herding Cats”

Hatfield Brigade 2017 Group Shot

Hopefully the above photograph sums up the spirit of a fantastic day at Central Club in Stainforth recording The Hatfield Brigade. Utter mayhem from start to finish, but so much fun I wish we didn’t have to keep waiting a year to have another crack at.

This year’s single ‘They Could Not Break This Town’ has been mixed and sent off to Strange Reality Studios for mastering. From there it will be hoyed out to the various  online distributors and available to download from 4th December.

There will also be a 2-track limited edition CD featuring ‘They Could Not Break This Town’ and last year’s ‘Merry Christmas From Hatfield Main’, but due to costs this will be limited to 200 copies so be quick. Sleeve design is by the brilliant Kevin Pearson of Vagrant Art.

Hatfield Brigade Recording 2017

The Hatfield Brigade Return

recording-session_hatfield-brigade_joe-solo

Can’t wait for Sunday when The Hatfield Brigade reconvene to record our next single together ‘They Could Not Break This Town’.

Last year’s ‘Merry Christmas From Hatfield Main’ was a total blast which got us on telly, had us briefly outselling ‘A Fairytale Of New York’, and ended with us singing onstage with Jeremy Corbyn…..en route we flash-mobbed a shopping centre, upset the Daily Mail and turned a former mining town into the centre of the universe for a few short weeks.

It was manic.

This time out we’ll be recording at Central Club, Stainforth on Sunday November 12th meeting at 3pm and recording from 4pm. The song will be released on download and limited edition 2-track CD ( featuring both songs) on December 4th. The recording will be filmed by Michael Lee Toas for the music video and as part of a documentary on We Shall Overcome he’s making for a 2018 release. All are welcome to join us and sing, but please bring along either a bag of non-perishable groceries for DN7 Community Food Bank or some socks, gloves, hats, or scarves for #SocksAppeal.

ALL PROFIT FROM BOTH SONGS WILL GO TO THE DN7 HARDSHIP FUND TO HELP PUT FOOD ON TABLES THIS CHRISTMAS.

Busy weekend coming up. I’m opening for King Blues-frontman Itch and Louise Distras at Cafe INDIE in Scunthorpe tomorrow and playing a benefit for the local Labour Party at the Vic Club in Goole on Saturday.

After that  is the main focus of the rest of 2017 and it will be a whole lot of fun too x

The Run-in Starts Here!

Salford Oct 20th

A cracking weekend on the road started at the King’s Arms in Salford on Friday where I played with the fantastic Paddy Nash celebrating solidarity, Brigadista Ale and the ‘Beer Not Hate’ campaign. Great to see so many friendly faces up in Manchester for the weekend to see Paddy and myself followed by my We Shall Overcome oppo Matt Hill aka Quiet Loner on the Saturday.

Salford Oct 20th 2

From there it was Middlesbrough Little Theatre Club where I teamed up with Rebekah Findlay to open for the brilliant Naomi Bedford and Paul Simmonds on Saturday. A complete contrast to the rabble-rousing of the previous evening, we let the music do the talking on a fabulous night. Naomi and Paul have a new album out, ‘Songs My Ruiner Gave To Me’, and I recommend you pick up a copy. I’ll be hammering it on the radio show over the coming weeks.

Middlesbrough Naomi and Paul

Speaking of the radio show, the second half of my interview with Raymond Gorman, founder member of the legendary That Petrol Emotion and The Everlasting Yeah, is tomorrow night from 10pm on Coast & County Radio. Last week we managed to gas so much we have to do it all over again! Raymond was terrific company and I’m really looking forward to that.

The next two weeks will be spent finishing off the next album out in t’shed ready for mastering on November 27th. I have re-records, re-mixes and overdubs to do as well as recording Rebekah’s fiddle and vocals next Friday. No Joe Solo album would be complete without Ms Findlay’s magic dust, and I expect the songs to go up ten notches once she has played on them. Exciting stuff.

After that it’s back to the road and the mischief and mayhem. I’ll be opening for King Blues mainman Itch and Louise Distras at Cafe Indie in Scunthorpe on Friday November 10th; followed by a benefit for the local Labour Party at Victoria Club in Goole on Saturday 11th. Then Sunday 12th it’s down to Central Club in Stainforth to record The Hatfield Brigade on our new single ‘They  Could Not Break This Town’, which will run alongside our Christmas song as we hit silly season.

Hatfield Brigade 2017 2

Recording is from 4pm and we’ll be assembling around 3-3.30pm. All are welcome. Michael Lee Toas will be shooting the music video there so wear your glad rags!

Once that is out there the rest of the year could go anywhere and nothing would surprise me with that lot! One thing is certain though, I will be playing Liverpool, Hull, Otley, Darlington and possibly Warrington too before 2018 is done and as always it will be great to see you out there.

#WSO2017- WHAT a weekend!

WSO Portslade

Well that was one HELL of a ride.

And it isn’t over yet.

The main thrust of our #WSO2017 weekend may be over, but there are plenty more We Shall Overcome events to come, running right up to December 22nd, so please get out there and support them. It matters more than ever.

Mark Gordon WSO Scarborough

My own personal WSO took me from Huddersfield to Warsop, with Durham, Stockton-on-Tees, Portslade, Scarborough, Leeds and Stainforth in between; and I want to pay tribute to Nick Johnson, Marcus Henfrey, Derek Smalls, all at The Golden Smog, Robb Johnson, Mark Gordon, Sandra Twitchett & Steve Skinner, Mick Lanaghan and Andrew El Barto Hawkins and every single person who made those events tick, from the artists giving their time and talents for nothing, to the punters turning up with bags of food and clothing or emptying their pockets into the buckets; from the sound and lighting engineers to the poster designers and back again; without any of you WSO doesn’t happen.
Warsop

I struggle in the weeks leading up to WSO weekend, this year more than ever, but to meet you all and talk to people at the gigs, to see the energy there and the passion and the dedication is a constant source of inspiration to me; and to watch as the buckets fill with coins and notes and the tables fill with food donations; as the bags of socks are passed to me with a word of encouragement; as the handshakes and the bear-hugs abound; as the spirit of those gigs spreads into the music and then back to the musicians from the audience; I know this is exactly the right thing to be doing.
WSO Stockton 1

We are showing that we are not powerless, that we are not defeated; we are demonstrating that we have it in our hands to make a contribution to a better world, to a fairer society; and that our donations, no matter how small, are never insignificant, because all those thousands of seemingly insignificant donations add up to something MASSIVELY significant to all of us and to the world beyond our venues.

They add up to meals people would otherwise never eat; they add up to warm hands and feet; they add up hot cups of tea; to places to stay; to a smile and a helping hand; but they also add up to an utter contempt for, and rejection of, the politics which create such dreadful need in the first place; but instead of sitting back and complaining, or worse still, accepting the world as it is, we are getting up, going out, and doing something about it. You, me and thousands of others.

Proud to know every last one of you.

The world may only be changing incrementally, but it IS changing.

You did that.

Next stop Bradford.

See you there x
